+ CHOOSE CAREFULLY!!

One of the most commonly-asked questions we're asked is "How do I choose the right referees?" - Considering that your references will be a major influence in the first stage of the selection process, you should think this through carefully.

+ DID YOU EARN A GOOD REFERENCE?

It may surprise you to find out how many referees we approach, only to be given negative feedback about the applicant or candidate that provided them as a referee. Sound strange? It happens. Appreciate that some people are uncomfortable about being a referee for all sorts of reasons. If the relationship with your nominated referee has been difficult, work through this with them to determine if they are "the one". We appreciate that work relationships are not all "smooth sailing" and make every attempt to evaluate the information we receive objectively. Choose referees who can testify .....as to your abilities, work performance, and cooperative attitude.

+ IF YOU'VE WORKED FOR AN ABORIGINAL ORGANISATION BEFORE:

You must provide at least one of the following as a referee:

-A senior staff member who worked with you

-A colleague who worked with you

-A council member (of course the Chairperson would be ideal) who is easily contactable

-A worker from an external agency that dealt directly with you

-A worker from the funding body for the position in which you were employed
